DARPA Brain Technologies: Electrical Prescriptions (ElectRx) This is some pretty old tech source. Wonder what kind of psychedelics though? The ElectRx program aims to help the human body heal itself through neuromodulation of organ functions using ultraminiaturized devices, approximately the size of individual nerve fibers, which could be delivered through minimally invasive injection.
Neural Engineering System Design (NESD) Looks like they're beating Elon to the punch here. The NESD program aims to develop an implantable neural interface able to provide unprecedented signal resolution and data-transfer bandwidth between the brain and the digital world.
Next-Generation Nonsurgical Neurotechnology (N3) The N3 program aims to develop a safe, portable neural interface system capable of reading from and writing to multiple points in the brain at once. Whereas the most advanced existing neurotechnology requires surgical implantation of electrodes, N3 is pursuing high-resolution technology that works without the requirement for surgery so that it can be used by able-bodied people.
Six Paths to the Nonsurgical Future of Brain-Machine Interfaces
Nonsurgical Neural Interfaces Could Significantly Expand Use of Neurotechnology Targeted Neuroplasticity Training (TNT) Matrix Shit The TNT program seeks to advance the pace and effectiveness of cognitive skills training through the precise activation of peripheral nerves that can in turn promote and strengthen neuronal connections in the brain. TNT will pursue development of a platform technology to enhance learning of a wide range of cognitive skills, with a goal of reducing the cost and duration of the Defense Department’s extensive training regimen, while improving outcomes.
Neuro Function, Activity, Structure and Technology (Neuro-FAST) The Neuro-FAST program seeks to enable unprecedented visualization and decoding of brain activity to better characterize and mitigate threats to the human brain, as well as facilitate development of brain-in-the loop systems to accelerate and improve functional behaviors. The program has developed CLARITY, a revolutionary tissue-preservation method, and builds off recent discoveries in genetics, optical recordings and brain-computer interfaces. Restoring Active Memory (RAM) The RAM program aims to develop and test a wireless, fully implantable neural-interface medical device for human clinical use. The device would facilitate the formation of new memories and retrieval of existing ones in individuals who have lost these capacities as a result of traumatic brain injury or neurological disease.

Sound Waves and Vibrations in the Quran: Physics of Divine Voice
Tumblr media
Quranic Concepts of Sound and Vibration
Voice as a Manifestation of Divine Command
In various verses of the Quran, the power of divine command is likened to an instantaneous effect brought about through sound. For instance, “His command is only when He intends a thing that He says to it, ‘Be,’ and it is” (Surah Ya-Sin 36:82). This simple utterance implies the immense impact a word or sound can carry.
The Thunder as Praise
In Surah Ar-Ra’d (13:13), the Quran states, “And the thunder glorifies His praise.” Thunder is a natural consequence of air vibrations caused by lightning. The Quran ties such phenomena to spiritual acts, showing that sound—be it human or natural—is ultimately a tool of divine praise.
Recitation and Resonance
The act of reciting the Quran is often described with sonic attributes. The word “Tilawah” (recitation) implies melodic rhythm, vibration, and structured sound. Surah Al-Muzzammil (73:4) advises, “Recite the Quran in slow, measured rhythmic tones.” The pacing itself suggests intentional resonance that can affect the human soul and the environment.
Scientific Perspective on Sound Waves
What Are Sound Waves?
Sound is a mechanical wave that requires a medium (like air or water) to travel. It is generated by vibrations and propagates in the form of longitudinal waves, compressing and decompressing particles in the medium.
Frequency and Amplitude
The frequency of a wave determines its pitch, while amplitude dictates loudness. High-frequency sounds like a whistle differ greatly from low-frequency rumbles like thunder. The Quran’s metaphorical use of these sounds, like the trumpet of the Day of Judgment, can be appreciated scientifically.
Resonance and Energy Transfer
Resonance occurs when an object vibrates at its natural frequency due to an external stimulus. This concept is mirrored in the Quran’s view of divine verses affecting the hearts and minds of listeners—setting them into “resonance” with divine truth.
Divine Voice: A Concept Beyond Human Sound
The Trumpet Blast of the Last Day
The Quran repeatedly mentions a “blast” (Surah Zumar 39:68), a cosmic sound event that initiates resurrection. Scientifically, such a sound would require unimaginable energy, possibly comparable to the shockwaves of supernovae or black hole collisions.
Moses and the Burning Bush
In Surah Taha (20:11-13), Allah speaks to Moses from a burning bush. While not explicitly describing sound, the Quran implies auditory experience. This invites reflection on whether divine communication can bypass physical sound waves, perhaps acting on deeper frequencies of consciousness.
The Quran as a Living Vibration
The Quran refers to itself as a “healing and mercy” (Surah Al-Isra 17:82). Modern studies in sound therapy suggest certain frequencies aid in healing. Quranic recitation, with its melodic tones and breath control, may function similarly—harmonizing body and soul.
Prophetic Communication and Vibrational Impact
Prophet Muhammad’s Voice in Public Recitation
The Prophet's voice, described as neither loud nor harsh, had immense impact. His recitations moved hearts and transformed societies. This illustrates that power does not lie in volume, but in resonance and alignment with divine truth.
The Echo Effect of Revelation
Revelation was often accompanied by sound-like sensations. Hadith reports say the Prophet would sometimes hear a bell-like sound when receiving revelation. Bells are symbolic of high-frequency vibrations, further aligning with modern physics.
Sonic Influence on the Sahaba (Companions)
The early Muslims often wept, trembled, or felt deep peace while hearing the Quran. These reactions mirror physiological responses to powerful frequencies—heartbeat changes, tears, or even altered brain waves—all measurable by modern science.
Quranic Echoes in Modern Acoustic Science
Quranic verses reference cosmic events often associated with loud, vibrating phenomena (e.g., earthquakes, thunder, trumpet).
Acoustic engineers use controlled vibration to influence materials—mirroring how Quranic sound shapes human hearts.
Studies on Quranic recitation have shown calming effects on the brain’s alpha waves, improving memory and emotional regulation.
Resonant frequency research now explores how every object has a unique vibrational signature—echoing the Quran’s concept that everything glorifies Allah, even if we cannot hear it.
Healing through Quranic Vibrations
Recitation is used in Ruqyah (spiritual healing), believed to affect unseen ailments.
Many Muslims report reduced anxiety and insomnia after listening to the Quran.
Children exposed to Quranic sounds early often develop clearer speech and better memory retention.
Hospitals in Muslim countries have begun incorporating Quranic recitation into patient recovery protocols.
Echoes of the Divine in Nature
Sound waves in whale songs and bird calls show rhythmic intelligence—perhaps a form of natural Tasbih (praise).
Vibrations in plants (a field known as plant bioacoustics) suggest they may respond to Quranic recitation.
Earth's hum, a low-frequency vibration, continues without human origin—possibly a divine signature in physics.
Natural disasters are often described in sound terms in the Quran—e.g., “violent blast” or “roaring wind”—showing divine power through vibrational imagery.
Human Voice as a Tool of Revelation
The Prophet’s voice transmitted divine words, showing the human voice as a carrier of sacred vibration.
Imams today continue this tradition through melodic recitation during Salah (prayer).
Children learn through repetition, rhythm, and rhyme—methods built upon sonic memory.
Modern neuroscience confirms that repeated recitation rewires neural pathways, forming stronger memory and spiritual associations.
Conclusion
The Quran’s engagement with sound, from cosmic trumpet blasts to the rhythmic Tilawah of its verses, invites us to see divine communication as deeply intertwined with the physics of vibration and resonance. Understanding this enhances not only our spiritual insight but also our scientific curiosity. At Muhammadan Quran School, we offer online Quran classes for both kids and adults that emphasize the beauty, depth, and healing power of Quranic recitation, where science and spirituality harmonize through every divine syllable.

Unraveling the Science of Healing Frequencies: Myth or Reality?
In the realm of holistic wellness, the concept of healing frequencies has garnered considerable attention. From ancient practices to modern-day therapies, various modalities suggest that certain frequencies can promote physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. But what does science have to say about these claims? Healing frequencies refer to specific vibrations believed to have therapeutic…

‧₊˚ The Science Behind @luckykiwiii101's Distraction Technique *ೃ༄
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Relaxing °. *࿐
Relaxation techniques are more effective when the body is at ease. A comfortable position minimizes physical distractions and prepares the body for a shift into a relaxed, meditative state, which is essential for reducing stress and activating the parasympathetic nervous system.
The Alpha State °. *࿐
Alpha Brainwaves: The alpha state refers to a brainwave frequency range (8-12 Hz) that is associated with relaxation, creativity, and heightened suggestibility. Alpha is a common state for the brain and occurs whenever a person is alert, but not actively processing information. You can increase alpha by closing your eyes or deep breathing and decrease alpha by thinking or calculating. ଳ Sub band low alpha: 8-10: inner-awareness of self, mind/body integration, balance ଳ Sub band high alpha: 10-12: centering, healing, mind/body connection
Counting and Visualization: Counting down and visualizing numbers can help quiet the mind, reduce external distractions, and induce relaxation. This repetitive task shifts attention inward and promotes alpha wave activity. It activates areas of the brain linked to visualization, like the occipital and parietal lobes. Adding another layer of mental activity, further grounding you in the internal, relaxed state.
Distraction Through Visualization °. *࿐
Distraction vs. Focus: The paradox here is that by intentionally distracting yourself with a scene or an internal activity (like playing a song mentally), you stop focusing on the external world (the "3D"). This detachment from external stimuli is key to shifting into an altered state of consciousness.
Default Mode Network (DMN): When you visualize or let your mind wander, the DMN, a network of brain regions activated during rest and self-referential thought, becomes active. This helps in decoupling from immediate sensory input and encourages a meditative or void-like state.
Letting Go: The act of distraction prevents overthinking about reaching the void, which can be counterproductive. When you're engrossed in a scene or mental song, you're no longer "trying," which facilitates a natural shift into the void.
Induce Pure Consciousness °. *࿐
Guaranteed Results: The process relies on reducing external focus and internal resistance. The void state is associated with a deeply relaxed state of consciousness, where mental barriers (ego) dissolves. This does not mean it's a deep meditative state, it's just "pure consciousness" as its name suggests.
Neuroscientific Basis °. *࿐
Relaxation Response: Inducing the alpha state triggers the relaxation response, reducing stress hormones (like cortisol) and increasing focus.
Cognitive Load Diversion: By distracting the conscious mind with visualization or mental activities, the subconscious becomes more accessible.
Hypnagogic State: The method resembles techniques used to enter the hypnagogic state, a transitional phase between wakefulness and sleep, where visualization and suggestion are potent.

(Arcane Meta) "Why do you persist?" And the Character Flaw of Viktor's Tendency Towards Non-Confrontation
After writing this post I had something of a brainwave about a character flaw of Viktor's that had previously never occurred to me before. Namely, that of his habit of simply removing himself from moments of disagreement or confrontations, rather than sticking around to fight harder for his causes or negotiating to reach a compromise.
I've spoken elsewhere about how Viktor comes across as fairly flaw-free after Season 1, so one thing I found really interesting about getting his full arc in S2 is that we can begin to see his character flaws brought into focus.
And I should clarify, a literary character flaw is not the same thing as a real life character flaw. A literary character flaw is when there is something about the character that stands in the way of them achieving their goal in the story. For example, being clumsy is not a "character flaw" in a real person, it's simply a trait of neutral moral value, but it could be a character flaw in a story about a person who wants to become a ballerina, something they need to work to overcome.
So, I would and have argued that these are a few of Viktor's character flaws, personality traits of his that get in the way of him achieving his character's goals in Arcane:
Political disinterest: despite the fact that Viktor has a stated goal of helping the undercity, he never looks to other methods for improving life down there outside his personal skillset of science. Even when his close partner, Jayce, becomes a Councilor, able to enact political change with a wave of his hand, Viktor is dismissive of this avenue as a waste of time even though he is proven wrong in this assessment by the Zaun independence vote (at least, until outside forces like Jinx's rocket interfere).
Self-isolation: Viktor is plagued by loneliness that appears to be so painful to him that it eventually sets him on his villain path. However, he is also surrounded by people who care for him, especially Jayce and Sky who are literally willing to risk their lives for him. But Viktor seems either unaware of their affection in Sky's case or actively pushing it away in Jayce's case. He's not actually alone, he just thinks he's alone because of his habit of self-isolation when he is focused on his work or (very reasonably) stressed about things like his imminent mortality. This is also a flaw when it comes to his goals as a scientist, because Viktor pushes away potential collaborators. He's not aware of Sky's research towards his goal of improving lives in the undercity until after she dies. He's so skittish about Jayce potentially shutting down his research into the Hexcore and by extension saving his own life that he doesn't bring in his best scientific partner in on the work when Jayce could probably accelerate or even solve the problems Viktor is facing if he knew about them. Heck, he doesn't even tell Jayce he's dying but still shows resentment towards Jayce not spending time with him or helping him in the lab!
Single-mindedness/Intractability: It's Viktor's way or the highway. He doesn't compromise, or negotiate, in order to advance his own goals. This is in some ways a virtue, he refuses to bow in the face of pressure to turn his creation into a weapon, which is laudable. However, as stated above, he also has blinders on when it comes to other methods for achieving his stated goals, like improving lives in the undercity. Viktor sets his mind on a course of action and cannot be swayed by any argument. If he sees a confrontation he can't win, that brings us to the final flaw I wanted to address in this essay:
Non-confrontation: Viktor does not fight for his beliefs or persist in searching for a solution in partnership with others, even Jayce. This isn't to say he never engages in argument. He states his position, but like many intellectuals, he seems to believe that simply stating his position is enough and then he refuses to budge. If he doesn't get his way after a certain amount of time, he shows his displeasure by removing himself from the situation entirely rather than looking for common ground or alternate paths.
I want to reiterate, these are character flaws for a fictional character. In a real life person, I wouldn't think of this as necessarily a flaw at all. Viktor's stance could even be a virtue in a real person, an unwillingness to bend the pressures of the world, and the maturity to not get involved in ugly fights but instead simply step away from a situation he no longer wishes to be a part of.
It is a mature and intellectual response but, when it comes to the problems Viktor faces in Arcane, it is a symptom of his pacifism that actively gets in the way of him achieving his stated goals.
Viktor doesn't fight again Hextech weapons. He simply states his disapproval and then removes himself from the debate, leaving the decision entirely in Jayce's hands.
Viktor doesn't fight Heimerdinger for the removal of safeguards or defend his research into the Hexcore. Once again, he makes his argument and then seems to wilt in the face of doing anything more than that. Jayce ends up fighting that fight in his place but even worse, Viktor doesn't seem to know about or acknowledge that Jayce fights this battle on his behalf, which in turn contributes to Viktor's sense of isolation and not having anyone in his corner, even though Jayce just overthrew the government for him.
Viktor is noted to frequently disappear for long stretches of time, without letting Jayce know where he went. Which is entirely his right as a real person, but given his character's patterns of behavior, it does heavily imply that he's hiding something, perhaps his failing health, from his partner. We know he actively avoids telling Jayce about the full extent of his health issues, given his own lack of surprise at his own prognosis when he collapses and Jayce's utter shock.
Viktor also avoids the spotlight and doesn't partake in the public aspects of promoting Hextech or even seem all that eager to put his name on things he created however, he also notes with despair that no one will remember him after he is gone. This one has always puzzled me a bit, I suppose he wants his inventions to be so groundbreaking they speak for themselves, but he not only makes no effort to attach his name to their work in Hextech, he actively refuses to go on stage even as a silent partner to Jayce to present himself as the co-creator of Hextech. This to me is another symptom of his habit of avoidance: he simply wants people to find their own way to his view, in this case acknowledging his work, without making any effort to persuade or even present himself to them.
But finally, and most salient to the point I'd like to make: Viktor after emerging from the Hex-goop making his greatest avoidance of all by removing himself from his partnership with Jayce, having decided that they have passed the breaking point of their partnership and have no choice but to go their separate ways.
The thing is, from a Doylist angle, this moment is necessary for furthering the plot. I actually think it's a rather clumsy beat in retrospect for how visible the hand of the author is in making it happen, because Jayce doesn't, for example, stop a naked Viktor from departing, which would be a reasonable thing to do under the circumstances when Viktor is clearly in shock, nor does Jayce offer to go with him, which feels particularly out of character given how unhinged Jayce is and his own wedding-vow like promises of devotion only moments before, offering to give up everything he's been working on to be by Viktor's side.
I suppose shock could explain it on both sides, or that Jayce just wanted to go back to how things were, not forge a new path, but regardless, the outcome is that Viktor once again removes himself from a situation he's decided is untenable, rather than asking for, say, some guarantees from Jayce that he is sincere, or negotiating for some concessions from Jayce, or even delivering an ultimatum for what Jayce needs to do to stay by his side.
I suppose you could argue that Hextech weapons was the line, and Viktor is so uncompromising that once it's crossed, that line cannot be uncrossed in his mind, even in the face of Jayce's regrets and desire to make it right by whatever path Viktor sets for him, perhaps reasonable given Jayce has ignored other requests by Viktor up to this point, like not destroying the Hexcore. But this all gets thrown aside when later, Viktor invites Jayce to the commune (if we even believe that's Viktor and not the Hexcore, as I've argued elsewhere, it's all a bit muddy and we can guess at many reasons Viktor left that day, one of which might have been to protect Jayce from the Hexcore and himself).
I bring up the question of how much the Hexcore is controlling Viktor being an active question, because I'm going to undermine my own point here for a moment. I'm arguing that Viktor tends to state his position and then retreat from any sort of compromise or negotiation with other parties, removing himself rather than yielding if he doesn't get his way, but he does persist in trying to make contact with Jayce during his villain arc. I'd argue that insofar as it is Viktor at all, the Hexcore's modifications have given him the confidence for the first time to fight for Jayce, and despite Jayce killing Salo, shooting Viktor, and destroying his robot self, Viktor as the Machine Herald is still pleased to see Jayce (what a simp) and does still seem to want Jayce to come to his way of viewing things. Arguably for the first time, Viktor is persistent in an argument or debate, but he still refuses to budge in what the outcome will be. He wants to persuade Jayce, but he doesn't want to change his position or consider Jayce's side of things at all, maybe because the Hexcore is in control, or maybe because Viktor has always approached academic debates in this way: by refusing to listen to the other side or change his position.
Ok, so this brings me, F I N A L L Y to the point I've been wanting to make:
"Why do you persist, after everything I've done?"
^^ Viktor's genuine confusion about Jayce's persistence.
I think his confusion is, as we've seen if you made it this far, very much in line with his character and this is what I just realized. Viktor doesn't understand why Jayce keeps trying to confront Viktor even though apparently they have opposing views. If Jayce isn't going to come around to Viktor's way of doing things, why are they still even engaging in a confrontation? Why doesn't Jayce just remove himself, the way Viktor would?
In his villain arc, Viktor is more persistent, but he's not more willing to negotiate. If anything, being a villain just gives Viktor the power to not need to avoid people who don't come around to his way of thinking, but to actively, forcefully change their minds against their will. Not by persuasion, or diplomacy, or sophistry. Not by making an argument. But simply like many engineers he thinks that his solution is best and the data will miraculously speak for itself and there's something inherently wrong with people who don't agree with his view.
Machine Herald Viktor firmly believes he's in the right, his mind cannot be changed, it's never been changed in the past (except by Jayce, by the way, when he made the argument for Hextech that seduced Viktor into being his partner in the first place. Once again, Jayce is the exception) so why does Jayce keep fighting?
And I think I'm correct in identifying Viktor's intractability, his unwillingness to accept any view but his own as correct or to hear opposing arguments, as a character flaw because it does get addressed by the end of the story and we see him recognize this and change. He sees Jayce was right, the path he was on was evil, it was going to lead to widespread destruction, not salvation. Viktor sets out to make it right. And once again, he tries to go it alone, without inviting his partner in on the process, and here too we see a flaw addressed: Viktor finally lets Jayce in. He lets Jayce help him and he doesn't run from the difference of positions, or self-isolate in the face of someone who cares for him, or try to solve the problem alone, secure in his incorrect belief that he must do everything alone.
It's a brief scene, but finally at the end, we address these deep character flaws Viktor has been carrying throughout the story of Arcane, and only then can he at least achieve his goal of destroying the Hexcore, with Jayce.

What do u think dad!Ford would be like? 🥹
☆彡 Ford Pines as a dad :)
Tumblr media
★ his past haunts him. Ford is hyper-aware of his own mistakes and he’s terrified of repeating them. if he gets snappy or distant, he always circles back to apologise to his kid. “i didn’t mean to upset you. im still learning how to be better at this.”
★ academic expectations aren’t a thing for him. Ford understands the pressure of being “the smart one” better than anyone, so he refuses to let his kid feel the same weight. they could be an artist, a gardener, or a professional bubble blower, he’ll support them 100%
★ awkward, deeply earnest. he’s the dad who gives his kid a PowerPoint presentation on how much he loves them or offers comfort by saying things like: “i believe your emotional pain is valid and deserves acknowledgment.” but he’ll also stay up all night building a model of the andromeda galaxy for their science fair because he wants them to feel supported
★ he loves teaching them. not in a pushy way, but because it brings him joy to share what he knows
★ he's willing to explain the same thing 20 times if they don’t understand it or sit through the same annoying kids’ movie on repeat because it makes them happy
★ paranoid protector. if you think Stan is overprotective, Ford is worse. he teaches his kid how to build a Faraday cage just in case someone tries to control their brainwaves
★ PROUD NERD DAD. he’s that parent. the one who builds overly complicated science projects for the school fair or accidentally intimidates the teacher by asking if the curriculum includes quantum mechanics
★ Ford has seen things. he’s fought interdimensional monsters and battled with Bill Cipher, so yeah, he’s terrified of his kid getting hurt.
“you can’t go to that sleepover. what if it’s a trap set by extradimensional entities?!”
“dad, it’s just Timmy’s house.”
“just Timmy’s house, you say? that’s exactly what Bill would want me to think!”
★ he gives his kid tracking devices disguised as bracelets and builds a mini forcefield generator for their room. It’s a lot, but it all boils down to one thing: he’s terrified of losing them, like he almost lost Stan
★ notes on the fridge with text “out of milk. also, don’t touch the glowing rock in the lab, it might be sentient.”
★ Ford doesn’t always know how to express affection, but he’s so proud of his kid. hes the guy clapping too loud at the school play, or awkwardly trying to high-six after a good report card
★ i have a feeling he'll insist on preparing the kid for every possible situation, from wilderness survival to escaping an alternate dimension. he turns a simple camping trip into an intense survivalist training session.
“so you see this? this is how you create a makeshift compass using only a magnet and some swamp water. now, repeat it back to me.”
“Dad, can we just roast marshmallows?”
★ Ford knows he’s made some very questionable choices in life. and he’s determined to steer his kid away from making the same mistakes. but he also knows that life isn’t meant to be lived in fear. so he tries to let his kid explore and make their own mistakes, even if it kills him to watch
★ he does these impressions of weird creatures he’s studied to make the kid laugh or making up ridiculous bedtime stories about interdimensional adventures
★ being genuinely interested in whatever the kid loves. they mention liking stars? he’s pulling out telescopes and teaching them how to navigate by constellations. they doodle in a notebook? he’s buying them every art supply and researching the history of visual storytelling
★ if the kid needs help with a project, he’ll spend hours (or days) going overboard. you’ll find him at 2 AM in his study, hunched over a model volcano, muttering about optimizing the lava flow
★ casually mentions his interdimensional adventures at dinner and the kid eats it up because, let’s face it, having a dad who’s basically Indiana Jones with extra trauma is awesome
★ he’s terrified of being a bad father, of not being enough, and that fear can make him distant at times. he overthinks every decision, convinced he’s going to mess it all up. what if he's too much like his father? what if he pushes his kid too hard? but the thing is, he cares, so much. and his kid knows it, even if Ford’s love is sometimes wrapped up in layers of self-doubt and fear
★ if anyone messes with his kid oh, they’re done. Ford may be a nerd, but he’s also a six-fingered genius who’s survived the multiverse. he’ll calmly dismantle anyone who threatens his family
★ Ford's bedtime stories start off like normal fairy tales, but somehow they end as “and so, the starfish rebuilt its missing limb, but it always remembered the one it lost. and it knew that even though it was whole again, some things leave scars you never see.” you’re sobbing. the kid’s sobbing. Ford’s eyes are suspiciously glassy as he kisses them on the forehead and mutters something about needing to adjust the humidity in the room.
★ bonus point if he’s reading his kid a bedtime story, he gets way too into it, doing all the voices and even sketching out illustrations
★ Ford may not be that emotional as his brother, except when it comes to his kid. their first stick-figure drawing? framed in his study. their macaroni art project? encased in glass because he’s convinced it’s a modern masterpiece
★ i think Ford is usually the patient parent. but one day, after hours of hearing “why can’t I do this? why am I not good enough?” from his kid, he loses it.
“you think you’re not good enough? do you know what I see when I look at you? i see someone braver than I ever was, smarter than I’ll ever be and kinder than this world deserves. you are my child, my greatest achievement and if I hear you doubt yourself again, so help me, I’ll—” and then he has to stop because both of them are crying and hugging
★ he insists on teaching the kid “important life skills,” but half the time it’s just him geeking out while the kid watches in awe/confusion “okay now, if you ever find yourself trapped in an alternate dimension, here’s how you build a rudimentary portal using only a toaster and three rubber bands.”
“. . . can you teach me how to ride a bike instead?”
“right. yes. of course. bikes.”
★ and he never stops learning. about his kid, about himself, about what it means to be a father. it’s not always easy, but Ford is nothing if not resilient
★ Ford’s idea of a trip is hiking through the woods with a map and an emergency beacon, dragging his kid along while pointing out flora and fauna. “see this plant? highly toxic. don’t touch it.”
★ his passion for research often pulls him away, but he doesn’t want to miss a thing. over time, he learns to put boundaries in place, to walk away from the lab when it’s time for dinner or to prioritize their soccer game over his latest discovery

a possibly massive clue in the new episode??
~spoilers for severance up to s2e3!~
Did anyone catch Asal's comment near the end of the episode as she was about to reintegrate Mark? I feel like it solves a big question the fandom has. listen:
"The five brainwave frequencies of the innie and outie".
This is actual science as well - apparently these five frequencies correspond to different mental states (relaxed, alert, etc).
Think about the sorting in MDR. We know each box has percentages of woe, dread, malice, and frolick. But why five boxes?
Tumblr media
Hear me out. What if each box corresponds to a certain brain wave, and the reason each set of data evokes a certain emotion is because that emotion is what is associated with that brain wave?
(or something similar - there isn't really a 'scary brain wave' but it could be something where Lumon is manipulating the innies' reactions to the brain waves - for example they might make the delta waves feel scary, as they're associated with deep sleep)
So the percentages correlate to Lumon wanting every single brain wave 'refined'.
I immediately got so excited when the word 'five' was said, I had to get this out there.
edit: on my rewatch I also noticed that there are four coloured wires - a connection to the four tempers, maybe? Especially because they're blue, yellow, green, and red, the four colours associated with the tempers in the refinement process and thematically.

Essay: Hypnosis is Irrational
For PSYCHOSPIRITUAL: A Spirituality/Hypnokink Essay Jam
This is an essay about bonfires, Quaker meetings, Judaism, and the entirely transcendent nature of hypnosis. I'm sorry in advance to philosophers and scientists. Don't come for me until you've seen God in the ceiling through your fluttering lashes!
--
Rationality is a core value of modern western society. Materialism and objective, evidence-based science are seen as the gold standard for how to view the world around us. It’s easy to see why -- this approach has catapulted humanity forward over a relatively short period of time, technologically and philosophically. Finding the truths of the universe through hard evidence and math is extremely compelling and much more logical than basing our views off of conjecture or old religious texts.
Hypnosis entered public western consciousness in tumult. Franz Mesmer’s animal magnetism clearly worked, and he had theories of why, but they didn’t hold up to scientific rigor. Really from its inception, hypnosis has been fighting to be seen as legitimate as a medical practice, and as compatible with evidence-based science.
It’s not that it doesn’t make sense that hypnotherapy fights so hard to be accepted as a “real” discipline, or that it needs to go through studies to be practiced on patients. We value medicine that is objectively safe and effective -- for good reason.
That being said…
I am not anti-science. But I do think if we don’t acknowledge the methodology’s limitations, we are being dishonest and misleading -- with ourselves and with those we teach.
Here’s the thing: We are not doing therapy with our partners. We don’t need to be beholden to these limitations. Not in our theory, and especially not in our practice.
We are free -- more free than any other practitioners of hypnosis -- to accept and celebrate its irrationality.
And when we stop trying to shoehorn our experiences into being understandable, we are free to explore and experience unbelievable things.
--
In terms of spiritual beliefs, I would describe myself as a skeptic-leaning agnostic. I think that how you are raised is a major religious influence on you, and I happened to be raised in an atheist household. Despite branching off from my family and taking spiritual exploration seriously, I would never confidently say “I believe in God” or “I believe in magic,” nor that I am even particularly convinced by my handful of difficult-to-explain experiences.
While my spirituality intersects with hypnosis, I am not here to tell you that hypnosis is the result of God or magical forces -- and I’m not here to define how hypnosis fits into “magic” or vice versa. I think that too is a kind of rationalization -- it’s trying to explain something nebulous in a concrete way, trying to fit it into a box.
I don’t think that calling hypnosis irrational should cause us to seek alternative, definitive answers outside of science. I think that we as humans need to be comfortable not knowing, not labeling -- a space that can be very uncomfortable for us, but one that ultimately allows us to have less-filtered subjective experiences.
Subjective experiences are the core of hypnosis. No matter what method is purported to be “objectively” best, the one that you should actually use is the one that makes your partner feel trance most intensely. Science simply cannot anticipate, direct, or account for the subtlety of the subjective experience of hypnosis.
Scientific tests cannot accurately measure anything about hypnosis, because hypnosis relies almost entirely on the softest variables: the interpersonal relationship and biases we have, the way a person is feeling or primed on a given day, the slightest changes in tone or delivery or nonverbal language. We might say that standardized hypnosis is a completely different activity from the hypnosis that we practice with real partners.
A brainwave-measuring machine cannot communicate the intricacies and depth of a trance. I would not be surprised, if I was hooked up to an EEG, that many of my “trance states” would not produce expected effects on the device. Even physically observable signs of trance do not tell the whole story -- I can be having an intensely hypnotic internal experience while appearing completely awake. There is simply not an objective way to tell when I am hypnotized -- it is completely based on my own feelings.
And yet, with shocking accuracy, my partner can tell the exact moment that I slip into trance, even if I give no discernable outward response. When pressed, he often can’t identify what the signal is -- it is very, very subtle, if anything.
It is a moment where his focus on me melds into my experience, into my mind.
Really, there have been countless times in hypnosis that I feel with total certainty that my mind is being read or that I am reading my partner’s mind. It’s shocking, and sort of maddening, and I have heard from many others that they’ve experienced the same thing. Our urge is to say, “Well, that’s a result of unconsciously reading microexpressions, of knowing a person’s nonverbal language intimately, of having a robust internal map of a person, being good at anticipating hypnotic responses, linguistic cold reading tricks.” That’s rationalizing, and it’s all very logical and certainly has some element of truth to it -- but it causes us to say “OK, case closed,” and sigh in relief that we can dismiss the question and no longer be faced with it.
The reality is this: Those are guesses. They are probably pretty good guesses, but I believe we fall into this trap of assuming the logical-sounding guesses we make are objectively correct, even in the absence of evidence.
Ostensibly, the vast majority of “answers” we have about why hypnosis works are just that -- theories, models, best guesses. Science doesn’t even have a singular accepted answer on whether hypnosis is an altered state. Often, working within a given theory (or two) gives us structure and allows us to perform more effectively. But when we really think about the nature of hypnosis, the truth is that we really don’t have much of a solid idea why and how it works.
That’s uncomfortable. I’m not pushing that because it’s the cold, hard truth, or because accepting it is some form of mental asceticism (nor spiritual gateway). I’m saying it because living in that liminal space of irrationality will actually change the way you do and experience hypnosis -- because it frees you from the limitations of feeling like everything we do has to make sense.
--
I have my own theory about why we want to make those logical guesses: Because it feels embarrassing to say we are hypnotists and yet there are things we don’t understand. Because we are afraid of judgment if we say we are actually mind-reading or doing magic, even as a shorthand for a complex invisible process. I think these are unconscious biases -- a result of seeing ourselves as rational people in a rational world. Spirituality is seen as lesser and fake -- entertaining the idea of magic gets you labeled as immature or crazy.
But when you try to remove your biases and think about it, it is crazy that we use just our words to make people forget things, hallucinate things, have orgasms, experience dissolution of the ego. And we don’t really know why.
True curiosity and wonder are hypnosis’s best friends. New subjects who struggle to experience trance or suggestions often are stuck because of their expectations -- they feel like they know what is supposed to happen, so when their experience doesn’t line up, they perceive it as failure. It’s why one of the best ways you can set a person up for “success” in hypnosis is to really cultivate a sense of curiosity, of not being judgmental of their experience, of not assuming they know what is happening.
Even still, this model of trance often has the subject experiencing wide-eyed wonder while the hypnotist actually holds the esoteric knowledge of what’s going on behind the curtain. But in my opinion, the real magic happens when both parties are prepared to question everything they know, to be surprised, to not take for granted, and to observe without rationality.
My most treasured memory is one that I keep close to my chest. Briefly: it was at a hypnosis-friendly bonfire on the autumnal equinox. My partner and I embraced and for an hour had a completely shared experience, wordless and hypnotic and bizarrely spiritual. Neither of us were “driving” -- we were both passengers, almost like being possessed. No drugs were involved, just the two of us in the right place at the right time, able to let go of the feeling that we were “crazy” or being illogical, or that we knew what was going to happen. We were both really shaken by it.
That ultimately led us to being able to have trances, occasionally, where we mutually let our guard down and play without the usual “rules.” We can’t do it intentionally, but sometimes we hit on little pockets of magic, and then the trance becomes like spellcasting, and spellcasting isn’t bound by the laws that supposedly govern hypnosis.
We know that hypnosis is influenced largely by how we expect it to work. We give pretalks to set expectations that often function as suggestions, boundaries, and definitions: “All you need to do to be hypnotized is pay attention -- it’s OK if your thoughts drift.” “Hypnosis might feel different from what you expect, like floating or sinking.” Even: “You can always come out of trance if you need to.”
I believe my partner and I are on similar pages about whether magic is “real.” The word “maybe” does a lot of heavy lifting in my worldview. It’s really more about being open to different perspectives, and playing in different models. So if we can dip into a perspective where hypnosis behaves a bit more like magic -- or otherwise irrationally -- then that actually, literally changes the way hypnosis works.
This is the true nature of hypnosis -- it is a shapeshifter. If you define hypnosis as a science or as a spiritual practice, it works either way. So if you can change the beliefs you inhabit, you will experience wildly different trances. And it may be irrational to assign spirituality and magic to it, but it is not absurd.
--
In this way, belief and perspective is actually where a lot of the nature of hypnosis sits.
After the “bonfire incident,” I was motivated to do some spiritual seeking, and I started going to Quaker meetings. Quaker meetings are simple but intense: People get together in a room and sit silently, opening themselves up to “messages” from within their own hearts or outside themselves, and if they feel moved to share a message, they stand up and speak it. There is no discussion, just completely passive listening and speaking.
I found this to be an extremely potent spiritual environment. We weren’t meditating, per se, just going quiet. Sitting silently for an hour with no other stimulation was luxurious, and felt quite a bit to me like a kind of trance.
I went regularly for a few months. I never spoke, but I did listen. There was one meeting I remember vividly where I was sitting and thinking about something, and at that moment, a woman stood up, and shared a message that was very close to what I was pondering over.
Then another woman stood:
“I know sometimes in this room,” she said, “we feel like we are all thinking the same thing when someone shares a message. This is one of those times for me.”
There was no fear of judgment, nor proclamation of metaphysical experience. It was just a statement of fact.
Quaker meetings taught me to be curious. If the bonfire opened the door, Quaker meetings honed my ability to be irrational. There was a period while I was going regularly where I was seeing wonder in the world at every turn -- a leaf falling on my back felt like a tap on the shoulder, the wind felt like a whisper.
And when my partner and I were doing hypnosis, my rigid belief system became so flexible that I was utterly open to suggestions about my experiences. He would tell me things and I believed them completely, almost like being on a drug, or completely enchanted. We were doing serious magic back then, tempting reality to peel back and reveal the “truth” underneath. It was intoxicating, and it certainly had an element of danger.
As intense as it was, I found this magic to be frustrating too, because I wanted to understand the nature of it -- I wanted to understand hypnosis so badly, and I wanted so badly for magic to be real. I thought that maybe there was a facet of hypnosis that I’d been missing -- some spiritual facet -- that would take me one step closer to an objective, unified, overarching hypnosis model.
I was right that I had been neglecting to think about spirituality with regard to hypnosis. But of course the idea that was leading to some overarching truth was a red herring. The real truth is that there is no overarching truth -- hypnosis can be seen from many models and perspectives, but there isn’t a singular “correct” one.
--
I have written extensively about how I feel this is core to hypnosis -- both in educational articles, an upcoming book, and in a personal essay about Judaism. My Jewishness is critically important to me, and has taught me a lot about the value of diverse perspectives, including on the spectrum of rationalism versus spirituality or mysticism.
By some, religion is often seen as incompatible with science (or rationality) -- unprovable mystical forces, an unseeable omnipotent creator. But there have been a number of important rationalist thinkers throughout history, across world religions.
Judaism’s most famous is probably Maimonides -- Moses ben Maimon. He lived in Spain in the 1100s, a time and place where Jewish mysticism was thriving. Maimonides was both a scientist and a deeply religious, learned Jew. One of his greatest contributions to the culture was in codifying Jewish law and practice in the common tongue to make it accessible to the average Jew at the time. In doing so, his rationalism made a great impact in Judaism as a whole.
Maimonides brought Aristotalian philosophy into Judaism, which came with a full rejection of the supernatural -- with the exception of God as transcendent creator. (The creation exists, so it must have been created.) One of his major theological tenets was that there was no conflict between the scientific and the teachings of Torah -- that the revelations of God were completely compatible with science. To Maimonides, for example, angels were not supernatural beings, but a metaphorical personification of the natural forces of the world. There are “angels” for why the wind blows, and “angels” for why we are held stuck to the earth.
If something appeared to be at odds with the natural order of the world -- whether it was from Torah or a perceived miracle -- Maimonides said that was our own lack of understanding, both of science and of the “secrets” of Torah. Essentially: everything that seems irrational has a rational explanation.
There are pros and cons to this, in my opinion. First, it’s neat, elegant, and sensible -- and I think it’s compatible with a measured view of hypnosis. Hypnosis is real -- no one is disputing that -- and while it has unknowable parts to us at our current point in history, that doesn’t necessarily mean that it behaves counter to the natural order of the world.
But I think Maimonides contradicts himself. If you claim to be humbled by the secrets of the world and revelation, why would you so vehemently reject that the world might behave differently than you understand or expect?
How can we claim to “know” the natural order of the world in any capacity beyond what we can observe? How can we claim that our observations are universal or objective?
If we can’t know, we can only experience, explore, experiment. It is brutally human -- reaching out to the world with our limited five senses and our remarkable consciousness. By the nature of us being humans, our explorations will all produce different perspectives and models, all of which have an element of truth to them because all of our experiences are “real,” true experiences.
Hypnosis operates necessarily with/on the human brain -- two unique human brains -- so we each see a unique, limited facet of it. By talking, playing, and connecting with each other, we learn about other facets and perspectives which influence our internal models of it. On a larger scale, as a community, we create, bend, and break rules about it as our community experience evolves. We actually change what hypnosis is, how it works, and how to do it.
Even in just 15 years, I have seen firsthand how hypnosis changes as the community changes. If you look back at historical sources about hypnosis, you can see that we do something radically different nowadays -- which we think of as more sophisticated, but then again, historical hypnotists were doing amazing things too.
Hypnosis as a thing evolves as we explore it more -- as we explore each other more -- and push its boundaries.
We can’t pin down what it is. We can’t model it. But we can participate in it.
It is transcendent -- as Maimonides and Aristotle say God is transcendent; utterly beyond us.
--
Part of my experience of being hypnotized really intensely is a deeper acceptance of what I am feeling or thinking, moment to moment. It is a kind of radical acceptance that what my brain is doing is important and real. It’s not that I don’t understand that I’m hypnotized, or that I don’t make any critical judgments about what is happening. It’s just partially that if I feel something “weird,” I don’t dismiss it out of hand.
When I am in deep trances, weird stuff often happens. I get spontaneous sensory hallucinations, I get stray thoughts that can blindside me.
Occasionally, I have this unmistakable feeling that I am “seeing God.” That felt like a crazy thought to me the first time I had it -- like a person of capital-F “Faith” would have. It didn’t suddenly make me believe in a higher power, but I was left with that feeling that I had touched something divine while my partner murmured into my ear and took control of me.
Hypnosis is not just transcendent by nature or in a vacuum -- it feels transcendent. It feels like nothing else in this world; it completely transcends language and the realm of usual experience.
It makes sense that when faced with this kind of experience, it makes a skeptical person like me feel for a moment that there might be something more, something ineffable. It makes sense that when I have spiritual experiences with hypnosis, it feels innately spiritual to me.
But also it is true that hypnosis is simply very weird.
Why do I feel like I am connecting with divinity in deep trance? Why do I feel certain that my partner and I are reading each other’s minds? Why have I felt a quality of presence or possession?
I can believe it or disbelieve it all I want. I can rationalize it in any way I want. You can relate to me, or think less of me and judge me. But none of that takes away from what my experiential truth is.
What hypnosis feels like is not just more important than what it “is,” that is what it is. The subjective experience that we inhabit is hypnosis.
Humans are moved by weird, irrational, transcendent experiences. Those are the times our worldview is affirmed or shaken. For those of us who are spiritually open to the idea that the materialistic world might be more than it seems, these moments are bright sparks of light, motivating, inspirational.
Hypnosis does this to me all the time. I am constantly amazed by it. I truly believe the only reason we look at it as a mundane phenomenon is because we assume our world is mundane -- we take it for granted.
But it is not mundane. It is two people communicating in such an intimate way that it behaves like a psychoactive drug. It is striving to know another person so deeply that you innately understand what they are thinking and feeling and you don’t know why. It makes the impossible seem possible; it makes magic feel 100% real.
That’s not some perspective that is out of touch with reality. That is the grounded view of hypnosis.
We are allowed to have crazy experiences with this art. Our main job is not trying to sell people on the idea that it is real. We work so hard to portray ourselves as sane and grounded -- we imitate therapists who need to have an answer to skeptics walking into their office. I think that at a certain point when we are doing intimate hypnosis we are allowed to say, “OK, I know this is real, and you know this is real, so let’s drop the bullshit and acknowledge that what we are doing is actually completely crazy.”
Hypnosis is amazing. It is just amazing. I am not saying that it is completely impossible to understand -- I think it is fair to say at this point that my life’s work is trying to understand it and communicate that understanding. I am saying that we need to not cut ourselves off from amazement, from confusion, from wonder, from not-knowing -- those are crucial to understanding, even crucial to science.
It is a form of respect to the art and to our partners to inhabit a space where we don’t know, to relax our egos and say that hypnosis is more than we can comprehend. To listen -- to ourselves or our partners -- when weird stuff happens.
Hypnosis will grow with us as humans if we let it. We have the opportunity to open ourselves to it, to greet it curiously, and to truly surrender to our exploration.

Buck: Eds, did you know? It's backed up by scientific evidence that couples who believe in true love most of the time will actually stay in love, their brainwaves are the same as the time they first fell in love even after forty years, isn't that so cool!?
Eddie: I don't need science to tell me, I know I am gonna love you till the day I die.
Buck, flustered: *speaking softly* Uhm...m-me too, Eds, me too.
Chim: Do they know we are sitting right beside them?
Hen: *unbothered* Get used to it, this is how it's gonna be from now on.

WARSAW 1994
You panted, as you finally set your suitcase in your hotel room.
Vi smiled, admiring the hotel she’s chosen and the view on the skyscrapers, the Parade Square and The Palace of Culture and Science with its windows shining over the night.
Jinx, not even taking off her shoes, jumped onto the bed.
And your thoughts were racing. Your mind filled with lyrics and sound. Ideas. Inspiration. Mania.
And above all, longing for the frail man with a sharp mind and sharp tongue and eyes the color of the moon in tonight’s sky. His soft-spoken voice with thick Czech accent was slowly fading from your memory and you hated your brain for it.
It has been full year since that meeting. That one night stand with a stranger that definitely had already forgotten about you – how pathetic you were.
You have never recovered.
All the verses you wrote the year until meeting him were inhospitable. Written like on machinery from a lyric factory. Algorithmic. Or perchance, like a school essay on a topic you never ever had feelings about.
But now, you could create elegies on the tint of his irises and the pitch of the knocking of his cane. Only thing that stopped you was the fact that you were not a one-topic artist.
The passion filled you up again, as deep as during the first days of your band.
If only these songs were decent.
Vi’s voice, that scolded her younger sister faded into the background. Only thing that existed was your brainwave.
You rushed to the desk and took out your notebook. You were trying to catch all the fleeting words with the trap of the ink. Words, they appeared and disappeared. Metaphors, they were forming, but never into a coherent thing. Rhymes, they either sprouted or not.
Last verse. Last sentence. Last word. Last letter and you looked again at the thing that got written. It clearly resembled a song.
“Oh, wow…” Vi covered her face. You saw her looking at the messy, handwritten embryo of a song lyric in your notebook. “Is it that song you told me about on the plane?”
“Yep… It will be at least. I need to edit that thing.”
“Deep brown hair, a cane and yellow eyes?” She read the lyrics and you cringed at how bad it was. “Is that about Viktor Dvořák?”
“Yeah…”
“Sorry to tell you this but… you need to move on from that guy, there’s no chance you ever meet him again.”
“Says the author of lyrics for Girl With Diamonds In Her Blood.”
“Right, my double standards…” She said, then started singing under her breath:
Girl with diamonds in her blood
Who tried to become a cop
She’s the thief of all my heart
She did never give it back
And what did I expect?
Since I left to the London airport, I'm coughing up my blood
Ah woooh
I'm coughing up my blood
I'm coughing up my blood
„It’s about that duchess Kiramman? Not about organ trafficking?” Jinx sat up on the bed. The older sister looked at her with concern.
“Were the metaphors… too gory?” She asked.
“It just sound like it’s about organ trafficking.” Jinx shrugged. “Maybe you’re just a bad lyricist.”
Vi, too tired to argue with her sister, sighed and leaned on the desk, then sat on the countertop. Her fingers messed with your hair playfully.
“You know, I get how you feel.” The bassist started reminiscing. “The last year was tough for you, wasn’t it? All these drugs…”
You nodded. Your pen crossed out the most stupid line in the song.
“Look at me. I missed Cait as much as you do him, but I moved on, so will you. It’s a process, every feeling is going to pass.”
“This won’t.”
“Or, you would just get used to it. Someone who’s in constant pain finally gets used to it and learn to deal with it.”
“Just like Viktor…”
“You will move on.” She patted you on the back
Your feelings were too drained to talk more. You crossed out the word yellow in the first verse, changing it to golden. Vi left you and started unpacking her suitcase.
After the song lyrics became quite okay, you took your guitar to the balcony with you. You were trying to match your idea, the words in the notebook and the notes flying from the strings. The air was warm but the night was starless. The sky was barely dark.
That song, the song that poured out of your heartache was barren with just unplugged guitar, and you didn’t want to make the sisters learn the notes for such selfish venture.
You wanted to perform it by yourself, either as a first song or the encore.
Still, it needed a keyboard.
Or maybe just you, your feels and your guitar will be sufficient?
“It’s 4 AM.”
You shrugged, hearing Vi’s voice.
“What?” You turned around. The bassist was leaning on a doorframe, in her pajamas, crossing her muscular arms on her chest.
“It’s 4 AM.” She repeated. And it was true. The horizon on the other side turned golden. And you slowly got coated with exhaustion, that all that time was suppressed by your vision. “Go to bed.”
“I’ll finish the song first, okay? I swear it’s just two notes.”
“I just don’t want our vocalist to fall asleep on stage.”
“I won’t fall asleep on stage!” You exclaimed through your teeth. “By the way, can I perform that song as the encore? Just me, by myself.”
“Sure.” Vi smiled with half of her lips. Then her eyes widened. “Wait, like… tomorrow?”
“Yeah…”
“You’re not telling me you wrote a whole ass song in a few hours.”
“I did.” You shrugged.
“But… the tour is not over. In two days, you can perform in Lviv. Maybe work on it for a bit first?”
“You won’t understand it but… It’s weird, but I’m having some weird intuitive feeling, that I need to perform here.” You shrugged.
***
After long rehearsals came the evening, and with the evening came the concert. Blue Velvet Club was filled with people. Waves of teenagers in the sea of the dancefloor, agitated by your guitar and vocal cords, Vi’s bass and Jinx’s drums.
As you were performing Girl With Diamonds In Her Blood, and the waves of the vivacious chorus bounced in the air,Vigot closer to you, doing a spin while playing on her bass. She put her arm on your neck, and during the guitar solo, she stole your microphone.
“Now everybody!” She pointed her hand at all the people.
Since I left to the London airport, I'm coughing up my blood!
The audience screamed. You took back the microphone, singing the second verse.
She said:
Violet, tell your sister off
I said:
What things today has she done?
She’s a menace, as you know.
Did she pull another joke
Cause that palace made her choke?
She said:
Yeah, I choke here too
Let’s go where the air is pure
Like the town or in nature
I said:
Will your parents let you go?
And what did I expect?
Girl with diamonds in her blood
Parents did not let her go
Leaving, I gave her my heart
Told her to treasure my love
And what did I expect?
Since I left the Northampton mansion, I’m coughing up my blood
You screamed to the microphone, pointing at the audience. “Louder!
I'm coughing up my blood!
I'm coughing up my blood!
I'm coughing up my blood!
And they sang that line with you until the final guitar pull and final hit of Jinx’s drums.
“Wow, that’s gonna be a lot of blood.” Vi took your microphone and snorted.
After you closed the last song with a guitar riff, you panted and ran your hand through your hair.
“Encore!”
“Encore!” they shouted.
“Encore!”
You took the microphone and arched your brow. “Encore?”
“Encore!”
“Encore!”
“I can’t hear you!” You played with the audience. Holding the microphone, you bent down to them. “Louder, don’t be shy.” You smirked.
“Encore, encore!”
“Encore!” One voice sticked out in the crowd. A man with kindheartedness on his face, standing up in the table area. Jayce.
What was he doing in Warsaw?
“Okay, you made me…” You tried to sound nonchalant, but shakes spat out. “1993 was a tough year, for me at least. But have you seen the sky tonight? Dark, wasn’t it?”
“Maybe because it’s night.” Jinx interrupted you and the crowd laughed.
“Shut up, Jinx, you’re ruining my heartfelt moment.” You said and the crowd laughed again. “Anyways… So, where did we leave off?” The people below you quietened. “So, we all know the night sky is dark but…”
It was difficult to go back to the serious atmosphere. Just like to Prague. And this time as well, you attempted to.
You laughed awkwardly, “Okay so, we the sky is dark, but there are always stars that shine. And their light stands out and makes the sky beautiful. And I had some stars in this year. Particularly, one gorgeous, Czech scientist.”
You felt the beating of your heart shake your whole body. You let out a breath.
“This song is about a brilliant astronomer and a sweet, charming man I met last year. And I miss him so much.”
Your heart raced to Prague. You let out a breath. So vulnerable in front of that audience. But didn’t they want a show? They did and you gave it to them.
You pulled the first string of your guitar, making it exhale a deep note. Then another. Your fingers were dancing, and your voice joined them in the performance. You hummed.
A song written in five hours, with barely any production besides writing the lyrics and composing. Fuck.
This thing really needed some keyboard.
In ‘93 one night, in Milky Way sheets of mine
There was a boy with mind like shining star
Deep black hole hair, a cane and golden eyes
And sky-high dreams of piercing heavens lines
I took him to my hotel room in Prague
The lyrics you sang turned you back to last year. As much as you didn’t want to cry on stage, you felt tears growing in your eyes.
Star boy, oh mine
The Venus-eyed
At least you were, for light speed time
Please get back in the world of mine
Let me help you pierce the sky
Fly along with you one more time
Up where exoplanets shine
The audience was silent. And the silence was never louder.
There was just the cracking of your voice and the flimsiness of the newborn rhythm getting out of your guitar.
He rose above audience’s heads in Prague
Carried on top his comrade’s piggyback…
You did a riff, then fastened up the pace. Surprise the audience a bit. The peaceful song awakened and your vocal sharpened.
They screamed.
And he didn’t even fall
Appeared to me after it all
Pounding heart like meteor
Hollow cheeks in Martian red
This is what I should have said:
Your singing screamed, too:
Oh, mine
Let me fly you till ends time
From my arms and sheets of mine
Up where exoplanets shine
As I’m clutching you
So tight
And I help you pierce the sky
To cloud nine
Your singing calmed before the bridge, now sounding like little bells. Knowing it won’t last long and your voice will turn into another guitar within a few lines.
And you, ah
And you, are
The reason that I died
Of heroin and crack
The reason that I cried
Crystalline tears
Like telescopic glass
Thinking nothing ever’s gonna fill the empty space
In my hand
In my hand
Where you, ah
Where you are
Where you were meant to stay
You arched your spine, singing the vocal run in the word stay.
Oh, mine
Longing’s the devil of man’s live
So let me retrograde the time
Stuck me in time loop till we die
Back in year ’93, our night
Us two in bed with pizza pie
I’ll love you with my naked eye
Kissing your thighs until you cry
Crystalline tears
Like telescopic glass
Oh, mine
You’d make my braincells multiply
To planets number in the sky
With your Czech voice like lullaby
With your body on top of mine
Okay, bye.
And for a second nothing was real. You didn’t know what you have done. You were panting and your hair was falling on your face. The oxygen tasted like Prague. But the club smelt of alcohol and people’s sweat. Jinx and Vi looked at you with incomprehension.
And you did not know what you have done.
Jayce was jumping in front of his seat, his mouth nonstop moving. He reached out his hand. The other man was holding a cane. And then you recognized him. Viktor Dvořák stood up with a help from his friend. Confused.
Just as you. You gripped the microphone stand so you wouldn’t fly away. Was it really him? Yes, it was him. Or was he just a manifestation of your longing?
Jayce said something to Viktor. He shook his head and answered, doing a lot of gestures.
His eyes took a look at the stage. Your eyes landed on the sitting spots. Gazes of the two of you locked together.
Jayce covered his face with his hand, the other one shaking Viktor by his shoulder.
***
„I still don’t believe you wrote a whole song in just five hours and performed it on stage.” Jinx said, as the stylist unbraided her blue hair.
“Believe me, they did.” Vi’s stylist was wiping off her makeup. “I was a witness.”
“She’s right, I did.” You said, sipping on the red backstage orangeade in a smoked glass.
You studied your silhouette in the full-length mirror. You had changed into a loose, a bit short undershirt and more comfy, low waisted pants. But you left the harness on your chest, along with the one buckled to your hips, with its straps peeking from denim fabric.
“Somehow-”
You stopped, hearing the familiar voice. You gestured with a hush, making the sisters get quiet.
„Where does your mom pull these backstage passes from?!” The Czech accent. Oh, that soft but sharp voice with intellectual top notes. It’s sounds caressed your hearing. Even annoyed, Viktor Dvořák sounded angelic.
Jayce said something. You couldn’t hear the words, but his voice was filled with excitement.
„Get back on earth, Jayce. There is no way Y/N L/N remembered a one night stand with me of all their fans and even more so that they wrote a fucking song about me.”
“But… who else could be a brilliant astronomer with black hole hair, a cane and golden eyes? That they took to a hotel room in Prague?”
“Life is not a movie. Rockstars like Y/N constantly fuck their fans in hotel rooms and even if one happened to be so special, there’s no way it would be an awkward cripple like me. Also, my hair is brown, and not black.”
Is that really how he thought of you? Did he not recognize the way you studied every inch of him in your two’s last moments? And how you listened to him talk about exoplanets? But no wonder, you could have not pointed out how skinny he was. And not interrupt to fuck him like some lecher.
You shouldn’t have gotten drunk, before all.
“You know, Y/N also said it’s about someone sweet so you might be right…” Jayce squealed, opening the door.
Your heart paused, the minute you saw his face. Cup, luckily empty, slipped out of your hand and landed the red carpet with a Turkish pattern, then rolling onto the linoleum. A tear left your eye, the eye of that cool rocker that twenty minutes ago boosted up the drunken audience.
“Viktor? Is that you?” You squeaked.
“You see? I told you!” Jayce shook Viktor.
You rushed towards him.
Viktor was even more beautiful than you remembered. Looking so sharp and dainty at the same time. But now his eyes opened up in confusion. Even the most brilliant minds are sometimes wrong, after all.
You wrapped your hand around him, fighting your joy not to crush his fragile body. Your tear landed on his sweater. Viktor hugged you back, his free hand enclosing around your shoulders. He smelled of ink and something unique to him and only him.
“Oh my god, it’s you.” You squealed. Your hand stroked his small back. “It’s you.” You repeated, still unable to believe.
“You remembered?”
“Viktor, my Viktor… How could I not?” You held him by his shoulders to have a better look at him. Viktor’s golden eyes opened up in confusion.
He looked on the side. His mouth opened up slightly, exposing a bit of his teeth.
“It is not, eh, a common occurrence.”
Jayce squeaked. If he wasn’t standing, he would be definitely kicking his feet like a schoolgirl.
“Are you planning to do something after the concert?” Viktor asked.
“We’re getting drunk in a bar.” You looked at Jinx and Vi. “Can we go in a group of five?”
“I'm in!” Jayce smiled, pulling Viktor towards himself with his bicep.
Viktor winced, hearing the word bar and broke free from his friend's grip. He looked at you knowingly. You nodded, knowing what he’s thinking. He sighed.
“What about you go in a group of three?” He asked, putting his hand on your shoulder.
They all agreed.
“Jayce…” Viktor sighed and continued. “Just be cautious of talent scouts and cassette sellers. I don’t want to repeat, – eh – the Austria incident.”
***
Jayce let you borrow his motorcycle for the evening. The engine rumbled, vibrated and twitched. Viktor held tightly onto you with his arms wrapped around your torso, his chin resting on your shoulder. His cane was gripped by the holder assembled under his seat. Your helmets occasionally bopped each other.
Your motorcycle outpaced a small, red fiat and you turned into a street with lights shining from gray blocks and sturdy townhouses with rain streaks. Afar, rose a couple of gray skyscrapers and the Palace of Culture.
Viktor hugged you tighter, and his body now felt rag. And so comfortable, like he was sleeping.
“Are you asleep?” Your voice bounced off the helmet.
Viktor shook his head.
You parked by a metal hall with red and white canopy. You took off your helmet, handed Viktor his cane and helped him get off the motorcycle. You put on sunglasses, not to be recognized. Getting more popular had its perks, but this was not one of them.
“Does this building have as many stairs as I think it has?” Viktor complained, closing the massive door of the palace after getting inside. “I hope it at least contains an elevator.”
You looked up at the ceiling, made of decorative, wooden squares.
“If it doesn’t, I can happily carry you.” You said, half joking. His nose turned red. You pulled up your glasses to get a better look at his flushed face.
“For your misfortune I care about your back’s health too.” He played unaffected but blood under his pale skin said something different. „I can assure you from experience that it would be at least difficult to perform with a broken back.”
The radio finished playing Black Hole Sun by Soundgarden, and the speaker started talking. Between words in the polish language, you heard the name of your band. Viktor squinted his eyes in focus.
“They were talking about your concert.” He deduced, stroking his chin, after the short speech stopped and Loser by Beck started to play. “It was certainly about the encore song, but I could not understand more. They definitely spoke something positive. Eh–, this language is similar to Czech.”
You bought two tickets for the observation deck and took the elevator. The metal container flew up with quiet clanking. After a long while, it stopped. The door opened, showing the observation spot, made of beige brick and stone, empty just for the two of you.
“I want to show you something.” You said, putting your hands on Viktor’s eyes. „Close your eyes, take my hand and trust me.”
Viktor nodded and let out a breath into the evening air. A smoke appeared. You made slow, tiny steps, with your eyes on his legs and cane. He pulled his free hand on your wrist, holding it softly. Finally, you two reached the barriers.
You took your hands off his face. Viktor breathed out, and you took a closer look at his face. His golden eyes flickered, then opened wide, and his lips parted, uncovering teeth.
“Do you like it?” You asked. Behind steel bars, a city glowed. Lights in buildings below the sky shined, but up here, it was clear. Cars and their lights pretended to be shooting stars. „We can’t see stars but there’s still light.”
“Are you aware of the term light pollution?” He leaned against the bricks.
“Oh my god, Viktor, I'm trying to be romantic. But go on…” You said, brushing a strand of his hair off his face.
He explained the term, meanwhile you helped him sit on the brick fence. “It was –eh– a great difficulty in my exoplanets research, I’ll admit,” he said, as his finger stroked your shoulder he held onto. “If we ever meet again… we could go somewhere rural. I want to show you how beautiful the sky looks in a place like this.”
“We will.”
***
You didn’t care how much time has passed. But for the whole of it, you interchangeably looked at the buildings behind the crates and at Viktor. Him, admiring the urban panorama was an even more picturesque view than the capital under you. Eyes rested and soft, tiny smile on his lips, hair played with by cool air. He shivered from the cold. You took off your leather jacket and gave it to him, but he refused.
“How’s your research, by the way?” You leaned with your hands between him, looking up at his face.
“I did it.” He leaned, pressing his forehead to yours with a soft smile. “There's three of them.”
“I'm so proud of you. My genius.” Your one hand grabbed his cold face. It heated up, as you pressed your lips onto his. His whine tasted sugary, his saliva like syrup. Viktor embraced your waist with his legs and your neck with his hands. His limbs felt so thin and fragile, just like you remembered him. “Tell me more. How are you naming them?” You asked, as your hand was slowly leaving his cheekbone.
Viktor responded with a quiet whimper, still dazed from the kiss.
“Could you, eh, repeat, please?”
You giggled under your breath, hiding satisfaction from your kissing skills. “I asked what names you chose for the planets. Unless you gave them these numbery names.”
“I am thinking of naming the biggest of them Hexcore.” Viktor’s arms hugged your neck tighter. He put his chin on your shoulder. “The second one will receive a name related to Czechia. And the third one… I’m still not certain. A name in Czech, perhaps.”
“I can help you with naming them.”
“Eh–” Viktor pouted. “Just like Jayce…” He took his head off you to look down at the city lights. „I hope he will actually sleep in his hotel and not find himself in the middle of nowhere.”
“So, the Austria incident wasn’t a one-time thing?”
„No. He may get into weird situations, but I want you to know he’s not dumb. Actually, he is really smart academically.”
“Tell me more.” You pleaded, in need of more of his piercing accent.
“He has recently discovered a new moon to Jupiter, and now his sponsors want him to have a temporary partnership with the University of Warsaw. And wanted to name that moon after himself.” He snorted, exposing a little gap between his teeth. So many things you were discovering about this brilliant man. “We agreed that this is his biggest achievement alongside surviving the incident. But I told him this name is a stupid idea and now he’s researching niche mythology characters.”
“Oh, and he joined a garage band with a girl he studies with. He plays the keyboard.” He looked on the side. “It’s called Sky & The Celestial and she says she’s inspired by you.”
“Me? That’s an honor.”
You felt Viktor’s cold skin shivering again. Frosty air made itself known to you too. You sniffed.
“Let’s go. It’s getting cold.”

More about Spinister/Shockwave please? Do they somehow get conjunxed?
Shockwave tricks Spinister into conjuxing him. Shockwave says "Oh, if you were my conjux then the satellites would not be able to read your brainwaves" and Spinister goes "Say less" and they are married within the day.
The Scavengers are of course invited to the reception. And yes, there is a reception because Spinister wants his friends there to have his back in case this is all an elaborate scheme by Shockwave to steal his fuel pump. You know, for evil science experiements. Meanwhile, Shockwave invites Soundwave, the one mech he respects. Soundwave shows up with all his cassettes and polished real nicely. Turns out, he's actually pretty stoked to be present at a conjuxing ceremony. He even brought a gift. It's a crystal-growing kit.
All the decepticons are SHOOK that this happened. Shockwave, married? Already an impossible thought. But with Spinister? Mr "Gets distracted by his own fingers"? Is the world ending? Are they living in a simulation and the code is finally falling apart?
Starscream: "What do you even see in that guy?"
Shockwave: "He's a mastermind. A genius. And my muse. His mind is an intricate and fascinating web of complicated thoughts and ideas that I can't wait to unravel. He is a mystery I am determined to solve."
Spinister: *aiming a gun at the door because he caught sight of his reflection and is now convinced he's being stalked by a shapeshifter*
Shockwave, sighing dreamily: "So fascinating."

Donation Found!
Remember Ryder? The SoCal pretty boy who was depressed that his life was a vapid, superficial, and party focused existence? He contacted Turnaround Technologies to ask, nay plead for a new body and a new life. See his Donation Request Form.
If only it were that simple. Turnaround Technologies utilizes some of the most advanced science on the market. When a body is fully adjusted, it's a slow and sometimes torturous process! If it was as simple as switching brains, that would be one thing. But the subjects have to physically transform into one another, and then brainwaves are overwritten. Chemistry, genetics, biology, and psychology are all involved in this elaborate process.
So Ryder had to come up with the $325,000 fee. Luckily, he had money saved and he was able to sell off the red Mustang convertible and his yellow Yamaha Sport Bike to meet the target. The final straw was giving up the deed to his WeHo apartment. Don't tell him, but his donor bought the items! Isn't that funny? He covered the rest with personal loans! Well, a little bit of debt won't hurt.
Let's remind you of where Ryder is starting his journey:
Tumblr media
And now let's the see information plate for his donor. I think he'll be very pleased! After this, he'll never have to worry about being surrounded by vapid, beautiful people and fending off pesky pool party invites! Yes, this is the ideal swap partner for Ryder.
Tumblr media
Meet Dr. Pervus Fondler. And wouldn't you know it? Dr. Fondler was a doctor in Ryder's hometown! They actually know each other. The good doctor cares very deeply for Ryder and was pained when he heard about his current circumstances. He decided that his job as a physician meant he had to step up and give the ultimate sacrifice! You know what they say: First Do No Harm.
Donor Statement: While I am nervous about the process, I am confident that I will give Ryder a new future, one where he won't have to worry about all that vanity and his gym obsession. True freedom for the boy!
Thank you, doctor, for going the extra mile for your patients. Turnaround Technologies will prepare the Exchange Chambers. Both subjects will be stripped down and cleansed before being placed in metallic, moisture wicking bikinis while our technicians prepare for the process:
Tumblr media
Now that Ryder is dressed and the drugs are injected into his system, it's time to introduce him to his generous benefactor. I hope he has a positive reaction to the kind of man he will become. Let's check in!
Tumblr media
Patient Statement: No! Holy shit! No, not Pervus the Perv! You can't put me in that. Don't force me into that body! I'd be going from a perfect ten to a zero. Please! No... LET GO. Please, oh my God. No, I thought it would be another buff guy like me. I change my mind, I changed my mi--**UMPH HRRMPH**
It's not clear why Ryder objected so strongly to his partner. Maybe it was the shock of knowing who the doctor was from earlier in his life. At any rate, he paid the fee and signed the paperwork so there is, quite literally, no going back. Swaps of this nature are once in a lifetime and, of course, quite permanent.
Subject had to be forcibly gagged and sedated.
Add another $125,000 for the service. Ryder sure is going to pay a lot of money for his new life!
When he came to in the chamber, Ryder was pounding on the door. I think he was crying. His oversize genitalia were mashed against the glass in his silver pouch. It was quite the sight. When the whirr of the machine began and the paralyzing blue light hit, his eyes went crossed. He fell backwards and pumped his hips in the air. Well, the erection is to be expected. I've heard the process somewhat erotic, though painful.
It takes a couple days and the exchange unstable during that time, but I am happy to report the following:
Tumblr media
Donor Report: I feel good. Very good. I'm probably going to move to SoCal, sort of take over Ryder's apartment. I'll probably start using his name now too. Don't wanna confuse people. I don't even have my old, perverted urges. I hope he's comfortable with the mental traits foisted on him. Oh... he wants to take picture of me? Ha, okay. I'll flex for $100. Recipient Report: What do you mean I can't go back *whimper* why do I feel so strange. I'm already out of breath. Give it back! What do you mean a name change is included in the package *sob* MY NAME IS PERVUS NOW??!?! Oh. I have to take his medical practice in my shithole hometown? Oh God! I just... oh goodness, seeing it from this angle it's such a fine body. So tight and firm! At least flex for me, my boy? A little. So I can snap a few pics and... use them later. Eehehe. Oh God, what have I become?

hii!! first of all, i looove ur blog 💗 also, neuroscience is one of my options of professional path after i graduate my biology uni !! its so great to see fellow future scientists talking about shifting.
now, can i have ur opinion on this specific post? i would love to hear!!
https://www.tumblr.com/kurd1shangel/780124618910564352/shifting-is-essentially-a-conscious-transition?source=share
hii angel!! ₊˚⊹♡ thank you SO MUCH, it’s always exciting to connect with fellow science students who also explore the concept of shifting! 🥹🫶
neuroscience is SUCH an exciting and ever-expanding field to get into, especially if you’re interested in consciousness, perception, etc. (all super relevant to reality shifting)! there are SO MANY fascinating neuroscientific correlates to dive into, and you’ll have so much fun! 🤍
now let’s get into the post you sent!! <3
♡ QUICK NOTE: no ill intent at all to the original creator of the post i’ll be discussing! if their explanation resonates with them and supports their reality, that’s AMAZING, and i fully respect that. 🫶 this post just reflects my own interpretation based on both my neuroscience background and personal experiences. we’re all the operant power in our own realities, and i’m simply sharing the perspective that feels most true to me <3
  . ★⋆. ࿐࿔ ✦ . .   ˚ .ੈ✧̣̇˳·˖
🍰✨ MY THOUGHTS ON THE POST
the post is partially grounded in neuroscience, but there are some nuances worth unpacking. it’s true that the brain can GENERATE immersive, vivid experiences (like dreams, hallucinations, guided meditation, deep states of hypnosis). these involve shifts in brainwave activity, such as entering theta (3.5-7.5 Hz) or delta (0.5-4Hz) states, which are associated with deep relaxation, sleep, and access to the subconscious.
Tumblr media
Figure: Human brainwave types and associated states of consciousness. Gamma, beta, alpha, theta, and delta waves are shown with their typical frequency ranges and related mental functions (Muse, n.d.).
it’s also valid to say that the brain often doesn’t differentiate much between real and imagined stimuli. studies using fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) have shown that when we VISUALIZE something intensely, the SAME brain regions light up as if we’re actually experiencing it. this is why visualization + repetition can rewire neural pathways over time, thanks to neuroplasticity, which is your brain’s ability to adapt and form new connections.
but personally, i believe that framing shifting as something purely generated by and confined to the brain, like with lucid dreaming or dissociation, misses something important: our CONSCIOUSNESS.
  . ★⋆. ࿐࿔ ✦ . .   ˚ .ੈ✧̣̇˳·˖
🍨✨ LUCID DREAMING vs SHIFTING (my take)
lucid dreaming is typically bound to REM sleep, and while it’s powerful and fascinating, it’s still rooted in your current reality’s subconscious content (Voss et al., 2018). you’re AWARE that you’re DREAMING, and that awareness gives you control within the dream (like flying or changing the setting).
scientifically, lucid dreaming involves partial reactivation of the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for things like self-awareness and logical thinking. these parts are usually inactive during normal dreams. but even then, you’re still in a SLEEP CYCLE, and the dream world is often unpredictable or shaped by memories, stress, and emotions from waking life.
shifting, on the other hand, is not just about becoming aware in a dream or hallucinating vividly. it’s a deliberate, conscious REDIRECTION of AWARENESS—you are choosing to focus your consciousness/soul (whatever you personally call it) into a specific, stable reality.
  . ★⋆. ࿐࿔ ✦ . .   ˚ .ੈ✧̣̇˳·˖
🍨✨ SHIFTING = SUBJECTIVE REALITY SELECTION, not a vivid illusion
you’re not passively watching your subconscious play out a storyline. you’re INTENTIONALLY ALIGNING with a chosen identity, timeline, and experience. you’re not just imagining, you’re experiencing. and neurologically, your brain supports that process, but it DOESN’T DEFINE OR LIMIT it.
that’s part of why i see shifting as subjective reality selection, not merely a vivid illusion. you’re not “tricking” your brain or having it “convince” you that your reality is real. because reality is subjective. you create and experience your reality. i create and experience mine. your assumptions become your truth, and my assumptions become my truth. we can have different assumptions, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that one person’s assumption is “more true” than another’s.
  . ★⋆. ࿐࿔ ✦ . .   ˚ .ੈ✧̣̇˳·˖
🍨✨ LOA DISCLAIMER
and of course, at the end of the day, whatever you assume to be true becomes truth in your subjective experience. shifting is deeply personal, and your interpretation matters. if a more brain-based explanation helps you feel safe and in control, that’s beautiful and valid!
but from my own reflections, lived experiences, and the scientific readings i’ve done, i don’t personally see shifting as just your brain making something up while your physical body lies still. to me, that still anchors your identity to the 3D body, as if it’s the only real “you.” you choose which version of reality to tune into, thought by thought, choice by choice.
so while the brain supports immersive experiences through concepts like brainwaves and neuroplasticity, i believe shifting goes BEYOND that. it’s not just simulation or illusion. it’s an intentional, conscious act of selecting a different version of reality to embody and experience.
  . ★⋆. ࿐࿔ ✦ . .   ˚ .ੈ✧̣̇˳·˖
